During our flight home from Japan, my wife noticed something odd from the window. Some of the pictures she took show what looks to be a large ship. We were very surprised that we were able to see it so well.

It was maybe an hour or two after taking off from Tokyo and I guess we were probably somewhere near Hokkaido. Later, looking at the photos, it took us a minute or two to decide that it was in fact a ship and not an oddly-shaped cloud.
No, we never thought it might be an alien spaceship or any silliness like that. To be honest though, with nothing to provide context or scale, it is easy to think it might just be a cloud. The angles, the shadows, the wake stretching behind it, and the fact that it is so different from the clouds “around” it suggest it has to be a man-made object, thus, a ship.
BTW, we were on ANA headed for Chicago. It was a great flight, as was our flight to Japan. A big thanks to the crews of the Chicago-Tokyo and Tokyo-Chicago flights. ANA might cost a bit more than some airlines, but we think the service is worth it.
