So I am working on my MA TESOL research paper, and decide I want to put include the List of Tables (LoT) in the Table of Contents (ToC). Creating a ToC in OpenOffice.org is incredible easy, but adding things to it is much less so. Correction: finding out how to add things to it is not so easy. Once you know how though, it is pretty simple.

Obviously, you first need to have a ToC and something you want to add to it that isn’t already added by default. If you are using headings (and you should be!), you can easily add heading levels by changing the ToC settings. Right click on the ToC, select “edit index/table”, and set the appropriate level in the text box located to the right of “evaluate up to level”. In the screenshot, I have my ToC include heading levels 1, 2, and 3 by setting OOo to evaluate up to level 3.

That is all fine and good, but the problem is what to do if you want to include something that is not a level 1-10 heading. Like the List of Tables. To add the LoT, we need to know what style it is. Clicking in the LoT title shows that it uses the “Table Index Heading” style.

Knowing this, we can go back to the ToC and tell it to include entries for the Table Index Heading. Right click and select “edit index/table” again. Now, under “create from” see where it says “Additional Styles”? Make sure the checkbox in checked and then click on the “…” button. This brings up a list of styles.

Find the style you want to add to the ToC (Table Index Heading in this case) and click on it to select it. Next, use the left and right arrow buttons at the bottom to move the style to the column for the heading level you want it to have in the ToC. In the screenshot, you can see that I have moved the “Table Index Heading” to Level 1. So now it appears in the ToC as a level one heading.

Like I said, not too difficult, once you see how to do it.
